Classic Arepas with Shredded Beef, Avocado & Cheese

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a recipe made for sharing. These golden, crispy-on-the-outside arepas are filled with tender shredded beef, creamy avocado, and crumbled queso fresco for a comforting taste of tradition.

Made in the Holstein Housewares Arepa Maker, these homemade arepas are easy to prepare and perfect for bringing a favorite Latin American tradition into your kitchen.

Shredded Beef, Avocado & Cheese Arepas

Makes: 6 arepas    Prep Time: 20 minutes    Cook Time: 8–10 minutes

Ingredients

·       2 cups pre-cooked white corn flour (such as P.A.N. or similar)

·       2½ cups warm water

·       1 teaspoon salt

·       1 tablespoon vegetable oil or melted butter, plus more for the Arepa Maker if needed

·       2 cups cooked shredded beef

·       1 ripe avocado, sliced

·       1 cup crumbled queso fresco

·       Fresh cilantro, for garnish

·       Lime wedges, for serving

Directions

1.         Make the dough. Combine the warm water and salt in a large bowl. Gradually add the corn flour while mixing with your hands until a soft, smooth dough forms. Let rest for 3–5 minutes.

2.         Shape the arepas. Divide the dough into 6 equal portions and shape each one into a thick, round disk, about ½ inch thick.

3.         Preheat the Arepa Maker. Preheat your Holstein Housewares Arepa Maker according to the manufacturer's instructions. Lightly grease the cooking plates if needed.

4.         Cook the arepas. Place the arepas into the cooking wells and close the lid. Cook until golden on the outside and cooked through, approximately 8–10 minutes. Cooking time may vary depending on the appliance.

5.         Prepare the filling. While the arepas cook, have the shredded beef, sliced avocado, and queso fresco ready.

6.         Fill and serve. Carefully remove the arepas and allow them to cool slightly. Slice each arepa open, leaving one side connected, then fill with shredded beef, avocado, and queso fresco. Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve with lime wedges.
